NEC’s UNIVERGE 3C Accredited as Unified Capabilities Session Controller

NEC’s UNIVERGE 3C Accredited as Unified Capabilities Session Controller (UC SC) by U.S. Department of Defense UNIVERGE 3C Added to Unified Capabilities Approved Product ListNEC_Logo_218x120

NEC Corporation of America (NEC), a leading provider and integrator of advanced IT, communications, managed services and biometric solutions, today announced the US Department of Defense (DoD) has accredited NEC’s UNIVERGE 3C™ software-based unified communications and collaboration solution (UC&C) as a UC Session Controller.  The accreditation for defense-wide deployments as a UC SC was granted by the DoD’s Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Unified Capabilities Certification Office for meeting military grade security, functionality and reliability requirements.

The NEC UNIVERGE 3C Session Controller is a key component to the DoD UC Master Plan. The DoD has defined a strategy to migrate more than 3 million lines of TDM based communication systems to all IP with UC&C within the next decade.  The NEC UC SC provides the switching, UC and collaboration features, and related applications, client software and devices to empower user communications. UC SC’s utilizes end-to-end SIP capabilities bolstered with assured services requirements, tested to ensure multi-vendor interoperability and certain command and control features.  The NEC UC SC is deployable anywhere in the world on the Defense Information Services Network (DISN) and the IPv6 capable Global Information Grid (GIG).  External connections accept any combination of standard SIP trunks or gateways to commercial, joint, coalition or DoD networks.  NEC’s UNIVERGE 3C is also the first UC Session Controller to support a range of standards-based SIP IP phones for use on DoD networks.

Accreditation from the DoD focuses on reliability and the critical need to support converged critical voice, video and data over IP. The DoD UC Session Controller testing process performs thousands of tests and validation measures over several months in the areas of security, reliability, high availability and UC functionality.  It also validates standards-based interoperability to both local IT infrastructure and across the DoD GIG to existing communications systems.

“NEC is very excited about the direction the DoD is heading by setting a vision to use industry standards, commercial off-the-shelf technology and moving to an IP infrastructure with UC&C.  This is empowering the DoD workforce to new levels of productivity at an overall lower cost.” said Kurt Jacobs, program director for NEC’s Government Solutions.  “UNIVERGE 3C’s software based distributed architecture, UC features and simplified licensing align and embrace the DoD CIO’s 10 points for modernization of the IT and communication infrastructure.”

“UNIVERGE 3C has consistently delivered the highest reliability and performance for government and enterprise installations over many years.  We are proud our UNIVERGE 3C continues to meet the stringent and evolving DoD requirements, which also serve as an independent validation to the market of its capabilities. While UNIVERGE 3C has an industry leading  range of UC&C features to empower enterprise users — security and performance have always been our foremost concern,” said Larry Levenberg, vice president, NEC Corporation of America. “As the DoD migrates from TDM to IP, our UNIVERGE 3C solution, with its unique software distributed open architecture and graceful transition to IP, provides a highly cost effective end to end solution and is a viable option for DoD users.  Meeting the requirements of the DoD gives commercial customers the confidence that NEC can exceed their expectations as they employ their own migration and modernization initiatives.”

CX-E The Microsoft Embedded Operating System Bulletin: #173

Microsoft Windows Server Embedded Operating System Policy Product Bulletin 173 - Microsoft Embedded Operating System Policy and Up.

The Microsoft Embedded Operating System

The Microsoft Windows Server operating system that AVST ships with CX-E/S software and AVST certified hardware, is covered by the Microsoft embedded operating system license. The AVST CX-E/S software (CallXpress software in the past), the Microsoft Windows Server embedded operating system, and the AVST certified hardware, constitute the “embedded system”. The Microsoft Windows Server embedded operating system is only licensed to run on the embedded system, as defined above.

PRODUCT BULLETIN

Bulletin: #173

Date: May 15, 2014

The following key aspects are relevant to understanding the terms of the license. Also see MICROSOFT SOFTWARE LICENSE TERMS shipped with the AVST embedded system for additional details.

 The Microsoft Windows Server embedded operating system is functionally equivalent to the commercial standard version of such operating system. For example: Windows Server 2008 R2 embedded operating system shipped by AVST is the functional equivalent of Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition.

 The only business application licensed to run on the Microsoft embedded operating system shipping from AVST is the AVST CallXpress and CX-E/S, or one of its components. Customers may not run any other software on the Microsoft embedded operating system shipped by AVST, with the exception of administration and maintenance tools as outlined in the MICROSOFT SOFTWARE LICENSE TERMS shipped with the AVST embedded system.

 The Microsoft Windows Server embedded operating system is only licensed to run as part of the embedded system, and as a result, can only run on the hardware platform shipped from AVST as part of the embedded system. Should the hardware platform shipped by AVST fail, the Microsoft Windows Server embedded operating system license may be transferred to a replacement platform shipped by AVST.

 The CallXpress and CX-E/S applications running on the Microsoft embedded operating system are licensed for an unlimited number of client access licenses (CALs).

Customers running CallXpress and CX-E/S on commercial versions of the Microsoft Windows Server operating system may be required to purchase server CALs per the Microsoft licensing agreement. Depending on the licensing model of choice, customers may have to purchase user CALs for each subscriber in the system, or device CALs for each device the subscribers use to access the CX-E system. Customers planning to run CallXpress and CX-E/S on commercial versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system should review the Microsoft license terms for the version they are planning on using to determine the license requirements, CALs included.
